researchintospeed Field Club live at the Library

Craig Black, performing as researchintospeed, is an Aotearoa New Zealand live electronic artist working with drum machines, modular synthesizers and real-time hardware performance. Over more than a decade of live shows, releases and experimentation, the project has developed a reputation for immersive sets built from rhythm, atmosphere and improvisation. Recent years have seen researchintospeed increasingly focused on modular and Eurorack systems, pushing toward a lighter, more flexible performance setup designed equally for clubs, galleries, livestreams and unconventional spaces. A major current strand of the project is The Field Club, an off-grid performance and livestream concept that uses a cellphone connection and portable battery system to broadcast live electronic performances from locations across Aotearoa. Part road test, part artistic experiment and part community-building exercise, The Field Club creates opportunities to perform and connect outside traditional venues while reaching an international audience through YouTube. The project has also sparked connections with like-minded live hardware artists including Self Control System from Japan and One Again from France, both known for outdoor and location-based electronic performances. researchintospeed has released a steady stream of music through Bandcamp, with performances ranging from intimate DIY environments through to festival stages. Highlights include closing the Club Stage at Camp A Low Hum 2024, touring Japan in 2023, headlining ModFest Aotearoa in May 2026, and performing a special Field Club set at the library during NZ Music Month. Following a 2025 reset focused on rebuilding the live rig around modular performance, the ADSCR EP arrived in January 2026 as a snapshot of a project still evolving in real time, unfinished in the best possible way. The Field Club sessions are now forming the basis of a forthcoming live EP due in September, with a further EP of new material planned for February 2027. Across clubs, livestreams and outdoor broadcasts, researchintospeed continues to explore electronic music as something accessible, immediate, human and deeply connected to place. This is the Field Club performance from live at the Palmerston North Library for NZ Music Month 2026, audio kindly provided by Craig Black. Produced by Manawatū People's Radio with the support of New Zealand On Air.
